How to Apply: Applications for GCDC scholarships can be both student-led and project-led.

For student-led applications, interested students can suggest their own research projects. In this case, we strongly recommend students to contact the supervisor they have in mind to discuss their research proposal ahead of applying formally. Staff contact details can be found on the relevant school’s website.
When applying, students should follow the University of Kent’s online application process. As part of the process, students should include the following:
– explain reasons for study/outline research proposal;
– provide details/evidence of qualifications;
– provide two academic references;
– provide other personal information and supporting documentation.

For project-led applications, we invite academic staff members across all Kent faculties to suggest projects suitable for a PhD student to conduct. Please summarize the project aims (max 500 words),what kind of attributes and skills you are looking for in prospective applicants (300 words), how the project is ODA compliant (200 words), and how the project fits within the GCRF’s remit (max 200 words). Interested academics should submit their project-led applications by Monday, 26th November 2018 to graduateschool-at-kent.ac.uk. We will post the project descriptions on the GCDC website and open them up for student applications. Students who are interested in applying for project-led applications should still submit their online application following the process outlined above.

The applications will be assessed by a panel appointed by the Kent GCRF Advisory Board. The panel will include the Dean of the Graduate School, the GCDC academic lead, and Associate Deans for Graduate Studies from all 3 faculties. The panel will compile a shortlist based on the quality of applications, as well as compliance with ODA and GCRF funding rules. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview (to be conducted in person or via Skype) in February 2019.

  • 1. Fellows of a postdoctoral (PhD) grant strategic basic research must be affiliated to a university in the Flemish Community, possibly in collaboration with a Flemish or Federal scientific institution where they conduct their research.
  • 2. Fellows can conduct part of their research at a Flemish company for a period of maximum 12 months per grant period of 2 years, provided such collaboration significantly contributes to the PhD project and a written agreement is concluded between the host institution of the fellow and the company, in which arrangements are made with regard to the intellectual property rights. Diplomas awarded by the competent institutions in one of the countries of the European Economic Area or Switzerland or diplomas awarded by the competent institutions in the French-speaking Community are recognised as equivalent to diplomas awarded by the competent institutions in the Flemish Community in accordance with the Decision of the Flemish Government on the codification of the decree provisions relating to higher education of 11 October 2013, the applicable European directives or a bilateral agreement.

Art. 7. (as amended by decision of the board of trustees of 28 March and 27 June 2018)

  • 1. The master’s degree or equivalent diploma, on the basis of which the application is submitted, must have been obtained not earlier than three years before the closing date of the call.
  • 2. The limits specified in paragraph 1 are extended by one year per period of at least three months of maternity leave, per continuous period of at least three months of full-time parental leave or per continuous period of at least three months full-time sickness leave taken between the date of the relevant master’s degree and the application.
  • 3. The limits specified in paragraph 1 are extended by the duration of the study programme leading to the degree of physician-specialist, pharmacist-specialist or resident veterinarian, provided the study programme has a duration of more than 1 year.  A 1-year study programme cannot lead to an extension of the limits defined in paragraph 1.
  • 4. The Executive Committee of the Research Foundation – Flanders may exceptionally deviate from the limits specified in paragraph 1 in cases where, for social and medical reasons, there has been either an interruption in the preliminary stage, or a reduced capacity to work.

Art. 8. (as amended by decision of the board of trustees of 27 June 2018 and 24 October 2018)

1. At the closing date of the call, the scientific experience of candidates, both remunerated and non-remunerated, acquired since gaining a master’s degree or equivalent diploma, shall not have exceeded a period of 18 months.

2. By prior scientific experience is meant all kinds of scientific activities including those that are substantively different from the PhD proposal or that cannot be described as PhD level research, such as application- or policy-oriented research or service-oriented research.

Appointments at universities or university colleges such as Tetra, BOF, VLAIO projects, SBO, or assistant fellowships are always taken into account unless the candidate was appointed under a non-research related statute, e.g. as practice assistant or teaching assistant, or administrative or technical staff.

If the candidate was employed in the business enterprise sector, the job description is a co-determining factor.

3. In determining the 18-month period referred to in the first paragraph, the employment percentage is taken into account.

To be able to determine the proficiency of someone’s knowledge of Dutch or English, Ghent University uses the Common European Framework Reference for Foreign Languages. There are six foreign language proficiency levels and is a basis for the recognition of language qualifications.

The PhD research topic is part of a Hercules (FWO) project (see description below), and focuses on design and realisation of “Games with a purpose / Serious games” with applications in the domain of Spanish dialectology and Natural Language Processing.

Requirements:

  • The candidate has a Master of Science degree in Computer Science or Civil Engineering/Computer Science (or equivalent).
  • The candidate should have outstanding academic skills, and a clear interest in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research.
  • The candidate has extensive knowledge and a great interest in software development, because software development of gaming applications is done throughout the research trajectory.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team, and will be guided by advisors with a computer science/HCI background (UHasselt) and with a background in language studies / linguistics (UGent). Therefore, the candidate will spend time in both host universities.

Additional elements:

  • It is a strong advantage if the candidate has received training and/or gained experience in Human-Computer Interaction topics related to end-user interaction and motivation, user-centred design approaches, prototyping and evaluation techniques.
  • Experience developing applications for mobile devices as well as game development is a plus. A possible category of games that is envisioned in the research are 2D online games.
  • Due to the application domain of the project and the activities to perform during the PhD trajectory, having advanced knowledge of the Spanish language is highly desirable.

The successful candidate is appointed for two years, and the scholarship is prolonged for another two years after a positive evaluation of the candidate’s research trajectory.

A Nigerian video vixen identified as Wendy, in a sketchy report involving her boyfriend Best Jide, allegedly bled to death after being used for ritual in Edo State.

The Nigerian video vixen reportedly bled to death yesterday, and according to chats shared, it was gathered that she called her Pastor after she woke up and discovered that she was bleeding. It was this Pastor that confirmed that Best had indeed used her.

Wendy further told a friend in chats shared that this pastor told her to have a river bath within 3 days or risky losing her life. She however lost the battle. The Faculty of Law and Criminology – Human Rights Center is seeking applications for 4 PhD Positions starting on September 1, 2019. This is a 40-months; fully-funded PhD fellowships as part of the ERC funded research project “Righting Victim Participation in Transitional Justice” (ERC-2018-STG804154).

The aim is to map best practices that allow for more victim-oriented approaches to and understandings of transitional justice processes.

Scholarship Description

  • Course Level: Fellowships are available to study PhD programme.
  • Study Subject: The research project is a multi-disciplinary and multi-method study of the effects of victim participation in transitional justice processes. It studies the long-term (and often unforeseen) effects of this participation on victims and victim communities by analyzing how their perceptions of justice and of what their rights are change in response to their participation in transitional justice processes. The cases under consideration are Cambodia, the DRC, Tunisia and Guatemala. The aim is to map best practices that allow for more victim-oriented approaches to and understandings of transitional justice processes.
  • Scholarship Award: The indicative starting salary is € 2065 net per month (salary scale PhD candidates Flemish Universities) in the first year, based on a full-time position. Several elements are factored into the calculation of the exact salary, including relevant prior experience and family situation.

Entrance Requirements: In order to be eligible, applicants must

  • Hold a master’s degree in law, social and political sciences, anthropology or a related discipline;
  • Have obtained their degree at the time of application or demonstrate convincingly that they will have that degree in hand by July 1, 2019;
  • Be fluent in English as their working language and as their primary publication language
  • Spend longer periods of time abroad for fieldwork and participate in international conferences.

Furthermore, applicants who meet the following conditions will be ranked higher during the assessment procedure

  • Good knowledge of the field of transitional justice, victim-oriented approaches or related fields relevant to the project;
  • Good knowledge of (at least one of) the other language(s) relevant to the preferred case study;
  • Experience with fieldwork, ideally in post-conflict settings, or specifically in one of the four case studies
  • Experience with either ethnographic methods (such as participant-observation, interpretive research design); large-n analysis or legal analysis – and ideally a combination of these;
  • pre-existing networks relevant to the research and fieldwork.

In addition to these project specific elements, we expect candidates to

  • Have the ability to work independently and in a team;
  • Have excellent academic writing/presentation skills;
  • Contribute towards the general well-functioning of the team;
  • Have some social media experience, or interest therein;
  • Work in a meticulous way and be able to manage deadlines.
